Programs

The role of the artist in modern visual art practices is very dynamic - working with a diverse information, researching, documenting, archiving, and using unusual techniques and materials, often crossing the boundaries of their own professional field to create a completely new field of internal links and communication codes. The program explores the possibilities of the contemporary visual artist to create a context that provokes new perspectives on their own work. Contemporary artists will be invited to the program to curate exhibitions in which they will display their work together with authors they have selected.

The program presents artists who model the exhibition space not only through the objects that represent their communication strategies but also through the lack thereof, reflecting on the links between visual and notional/semantic content. The so-created ‘breaks’ in the expositions set certain perceptual parameters and provoke a careful reflection of concepts located in the specific architectural space of a building built to store a huge, but already empty water tank.

explores the way in which the creative collaboration between artist and curator works - from the selection of the subject of an exhibition, through research and gathering of information to creation of the visual content. Within the project, the invited artists and curators will present the work process of the exhibitions to the public. The meaning of these meetings is a discussion of the new ways in which contemporary art commented on the problems of the modern world.

The program explores the growing field of the moving image in modern art, mainly by tracking the work of visual artists that create a visual context through new achievements in digital and networking technologies. Images on the мove present artists who work with new media, video art, performance in the form of exhibitions, presentations, lectures. The focus of the program is to popularize these modern forms of art encompassing a wide range of ideas and practices.

The ecosystem is a bio system composed of co-functioning living organisms that interacts with the physical environment through nutrient cycles and energy flows, thus creating a clearly defined biotic structure. /Wikipedia /
Creative collaborations between contemporary visual artists and professionals from other fields such as musicians, philosophers, architects, writers, actors, designers, photographers, etc. will be developed within this program to create a joint project in the water tower space. The result as well as the work on the projects will be presented to the public in the form of exhibitions and lectures. The aim of this program is to focus on cultural products that cannot be defined as belonging to a particular genre or art, because they are the result of the work of professionals from different fields of culture.

Gallery +359 is located in the building of the only preserved water tower in Sofia. It was designed in 1903 by the German engineer Franz Salbach. The construction of the tower started on September 20, 1928 and ended on November 20, 1929. It was built at the highest point of the Lozenets district in Sofia (610.40 m) based on a French system for the construction of water towers with reinforced concrete and brick masonry. The Water tower Tank is positioned 15 m higher than the highest elevation. Its height is 27 m and the volume of the tank is 100 cubic meters. The architecture of the building has provided other than being a hydraulic structure, to serve also for a watchtower. At a curatorial invitation, a visual artist will work on a project related to the specific space of the building. The residence provides a working stay of the author from two weeks to a month at the invitation of the gallery in Sofia, to create a site-specific installation for the Water tower space. Within the Resident Program, the artists will make a presentation of his work to the public and will draw up an exhibition plan. The date of the presentation will be decided according to the exhibition schedule and the author's possibility to stay. Gallery +359 will provide a studio; will cover the travel expenses as well as the cost of materials for the preparation of the works for the exhibition. The artists will donate a work for the collection of contemporary art of Gallery +359.
